„The best ‚Bezahlkarte‘ is the bank card for my own bank account!“ - For a non-discriminatory payment card in Landkreis Tübingen.

By establishing a new legal framework for a payment card for asylum seekers once more an anti-migration and anti-integration idea has been incorporated into the political mainstream of Germany. Unfortunately it seems to be unavoidable that such a payment card for refugees will be introduced in the district of Tübingen, too.

As what should have been avoided does not seem to be avoidable anymore, 26 local non-government organisations working in refugee support, solidarity and human rights have united in an alliance, to try and influence the practical implementation of such a payment card in our area for better.

The following public demands of this alliance, for a payment card that should be as non-discriminatory as possible in the district of Tübingen, have been sent to the political factions of the district's parliament (Kreistag) and the administration of the district (Landratsamt on May 10th 2024 already:

*Together we demand: If a payment card for refugees has to be introduced in the district of Tübingen at all, then this payment card in a practical way has to...

  • ...be usable without any restrictions
  • ...allow cash withdrawals without any monthly limits
  • ...allow cashless payments and transfers to other people
  • ...handed out to as less people as possible
  • ...be forced upon people for as short a time as possible
  • ...be usable in daily life in a non-discrimantory way
  • ...technically working without problems - from day one
  • ...and such a card must not lead to more work strain on volunteer and non-government support organizations

Update 02/2025: as the district of Tübingen has indeed started to give out payment cards to affected persons by now, we will be starting our new "card exchange" campaign on March 1st, 2025. By this we want to enable all refugees who are aggrieved by the payment card to use the financial means to which they are entitled in their own responsibility and in the way the deem to be most suitable for themselves. Similar solidarity campaigns do already exist in many other cities and districts throughout Germany.
